San Antonio State Hospital – Logan Hall
The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older (or one in four) has a mental disorder. Of those, 6 percent or one in 17 has a serious mental illness such as major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or borderline personality disorder.
Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a serious medical illness that causes shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe.
This free Community Education program is the 8th in the series “Erasing Stigma – Changing Minds”, a free community education series sponsored by the San Antonio State Hospital and the Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Hospital. Our speakers have graciously agreed to provide these presentations at no charge to you or the sponsoring organizations. We take this opportunity to publically thank them for their commitment to the patients and communities they serve.
David Gonzalez, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and has over 15 years experience in Psychiatry. He is presently an attending physician at the San Antonio State Hospital.
