About the cover . . .

This sketch, drawn by Keith Kolodziej, was used as the cover on "Grandma's Recipes: A Collection of Family History" (the cookbook, which includes all of Meta Malik's heirloom recipes and several historical texts, can be purchased from Heritage House, 1025 "C" Street, Floresville, Texas 78114, 830-393-4201).

The cover is designed to evoke feelings and job memories of Grandma and Grandpa Malik.  The abstract images are made to symbolize the intricate pathways that lead to objects of importance and spaces of arrival.  Their yard, or garden park, was articulated with pathways and unfolding exterior spaces.  As a young boy I remember this garden park as this mystical dreamscape where my imagination could run wild.

The sketches of the Malik garden park, aerial view, and the front facade of the Malik House on the front cover were done as studies.  These sketches, architects refer to as character sketches and are used to capture the essence of a space.  The accuracy of these images are not as critical as the memories they are meant to evoke.

Generation upon generation, architects set out with a challenge.  This challenge is not about building houses, offices, or churches.  Rather they strive to build safety, relaxation, and culture.  Whether my great grandparents realized it or not, they have succeeded at what many architects try to accomplish.

As legacies continue and memories live on, we always remember Grandma's house because you could never leave on an empty stomach.
