San Antonio Business Journal, Friday December 23, 2011, 12:59 p.m. CST
This article was posted on the San Antonio Business Journal’s web site in less than an hour after the Mayor’s “news release” was sent out to all the media outlets in southwest Texas:
http://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/news/2011/12/23/floresvilles-finances-are-operating.html
The article opens with the following statement: “Floresville Mayor Daniel Tejada said Friday that city residents can be assured that all the errors from the previous budget have been corrected and the revised budget worksheet is accurate. The situation has been corrected with the cooperation of the city’s prior auditor Malcolm Gulley and the current auditor Patricia Wagner.”
I found it insulting to the citizens of this community that have been asking questions for months that the “news release” and this article both confirm “errors” in the previous budget. The “news release” attributed these “errors” to a software system that requires updates. Even more disturbing and insulting to the taxpayers of this community was that the City of Floresville, under the direction of the City Manager, retained GRE Creative Communications, a publicity and marketing firm, for an undisclosed amount to publish this “news release”.
The “news release” states that Mayor Tejada explained that “All information displayed on the revised budget is accurate. No deficit existed last year, none exists now and no deficit is projected.”
Mr. Mayor, last year’s numbers have never been in question, as it’s audit has not been available for review. The questions relate primarily to FY 2009-2010 and the two previous fiscal years. Let me refresh your memory. The Financial Statement including Independent Auditor’s report for the City of Floresville, Texas, Year Ended September 30,2010 states the following:
Total Net Assets DECREASED by $301,906.00. Of that $135,490.00 was that of the Governmental Activities (i.e. General Fund) and $166,416.00 was of the Business Activities (i.e. Water/Sewer Funds, etc.). These are hard facts that exist in YOUR AUDITS! The "Creative Communication" that was published does a poor job of spinning away from these facts.
Contrary to the delusional posts on Facebook made by you, Councilman Gomez, and your followers, this “news release” does not put an end to the questions. Rather it amplifies them. I would suggest that a deliberate effort, without spending additional taxpayer money, be made at answering the questions that have been asked, over, and over again, instead of planing your “Extravaganza 2012”, as you recently posted you were doing on Facebook.
The Recall Petition continues and is gathering more and more signatures as each day passes. We are on day 20 and we have nearly all the signatures required. Very soon the citizens of this community will be back in charge!
