Re: President Obama’s statement concerning the HHS Mandate

We are hopeful that this morning’s announcement by President Barrack Obama concerning the recent HHS mandate will create an opportunity to have a more thorough discussion with the administration. His proposal deserves close scrutiny to determine if it provides adequate and predictable protection of the principle of religious freedom. As we continue to study this matter, we join with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in reserving judgment on the president’s attempt at reconciling our differences on this matter.
We personally want to thank our brothers and sisters in Christ, and all people of good will, who have united their voices with ours to help elected officials to understand our alarm over any intrusion into freedom of conscience. We believe the people’s diligence and passion for liberty helped to move this public debate forward. We ask that you continue to pray for a just resolution to this issue and that we continue to form our consciences according to our faith.
The bishops of the United States are in the process of studying President Obama’s latest proposal and are hopeful that the dialogue with all government officials will strengthen their resolve to preserve and protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, most importantly the freedom to practice our faith in accordance with our conscience.
Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller
Bishop Oscar Cantú
