|The mayor posted the following on his facebook page last night at about 7:30 p.m.
“The City Council has voted to renovate our River Park, which includes redoing bathrooms, the old pavilion, and probably demolishing the concession stand. At the same time, adding 5 permanent baseball/softball fields, and 2 football/soccer fields. So much propaganda has been spread about our waste water, our drinking water, our streets, high speed internet ...I urge everyone to question what may be said ...the funding to renovate our park would not be impact your city taxes. In fact, no city property taxes would be used to pay for the project. Not a single penny would pay for the project. There will be an attempt to stop the project by a Leon Valley resident. The same person who has made the City spend thousand of dollars to defend his false allegations. Be careful of any petition that he and his friends may ask you to sign. Urge your parents and grandparents to be cautious. The Little League, the Soccer Association, and the Wildcats have expressed concerns about the conditiions of the park, and the need for additional permanent fields. Let\'s keep our town moving forward.”
I don’t know what City Council Meeting the mayor attended, as the bond (or as the mayor is calling Certificates of Obligation) was the agenda item. The only persons at Thursday’s meeting that even discussed the renovation of River Park were those who spoke against the Certificates of Obligation! (See Breaking News Story Above)
I find it entertaining that we have now moved from a Sports Complex to a renovation of River Park. Such a discussion has NOT occurred by the City Council, NO VOTE has been TAKEN and NO PLAN exists.
Furthermore, the resolution passed by the Floresville Economic Development Corporation (The driving force behind the Public Hearing on Monday May 7th) was to enter into a intralocal agreement with the City of Floresville to provide funding for the construction of a Sports Complex!
For the Mayor to publish on a public forum that the City Council Voted to renovate River Park is an OUTRIGHT LIE!
The mayor stated “In fact, no city property taxes would be used to pay for the project.” This statement is NOT A GUARANTEE! The Certificates of Obligation that are going to fund some unnamed project are guaranteed by the City of Floresville’s ability to raise property taxes. If for any reason the City of Floresville does not have the funds to make the payments (OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS), they must, by law, raise property taxes.
Regarding the mayor’s comments regarding propaganda about wastewater, drinking water, streets and high speed Internet. Well, I guess it is all hear say as we, the citizens and business owners of the City of Floresville have yet to see the plan, timelines, costs, and funding sources for these infrastructure needs of the City.
Regarding the mayor’s comments regarding false allegations. Another LIE! I personally have not taken ANY legal action against the City. It was the Mayor and company that felt the need to hire attorneys and a public relations firm when the threat of recall loomed above them. The County Attorney filed a Lawsuit against the City Manager regarding the historical information presented in the 2011-2012 City Budget. A lawsuit that was withdrawn after $5.2 Million in adjustments were made; adjustments that have yet to be explained!
The mayor is correct in stating that the little league, the soccer associations and wildcats have all expressed concerns about the conditions of the park and the needs of expansion. Yes, there is a need for improvements and expansion, but we, the taxpayers, deserve to see a plan before blinding approving $1.8 million in debt guaranteed by the City’s ability to raise taxes!
Yes, do call your parents and grandparents to be cautions. It is easy to say that this is what we are going to do, but show us the plan; show us the details in writing; show us the costs. Caution everyone you know about approving something before they really know what it is
More importantly know what this petition is asking for. This petition is NOT for or against a Sports Complex or a Renovation of the River Park. It is simply asking to allow the voters to decide how their tax dollars (sales tax and property tax) are spent.
