Some conservatives say they are ready to bid farewell to socialism and move
to Canada (which has a federal single payer health care system)
because of the Supreme Court Ruling on the Affordable Care Act.**
Or Rush Limbaugh threatens move to Costa Rica, which also has
universal health care.
Kinda like the signs appearing at Tea Party rallies, “Government, keep your hands
off my Medicare,” or the medical student lambasting government health care while
attending the state university medical school.
These people could move to Chad, which has neither government k-12 education
nor hardly any government health care. A lot of liberty in Chad, including the liberty
to die young.
Behind the need for health care: We are all born frail and mortal--and we all will need health care sometime(s) in our lives. All the other democracies in the world recognize this and spend half the per capita amount on universal health care with longer life expectancies and other better results...and maybe now the U.S. is on its way, too.
For many years, I rented apartments in Phoenix to Canadian winter visitors,
who had more wealth than those Canadians who couldn’t
afford to come to Arizona or Florida or Texas in the winter. Many of
these winter visitors would return early to Canada in the spring for
health care; unless they were really wealthy, they didn’t want any
part of the U.S. system.
The Canadian system doesn’t determine where you are in the queue
by the amount of money you have or how good your health insurance is,
but rather on how life threatening your condition is.
Yes, there are flaws in any system.
There are delays for non-life threatening health care in Canada;
but the Canadians could vote for people who would increase
funding for non-life threatening health care.
Now, the U.S. spends 18% of its economy on health care;
Canada about 10%, and the UK toto government system (doctors
are paid by the government--like the U.S. military) about 7%.
Conservatives in the UK--Thatcher, Major, Cameron--embrace
the universal government system they have in the UK just as they
embrace basic public education for all.
