Lots of factors go into why maybe they are or are not successful as they get older. Several will continue and do fine. Young bodies develop and mature, kids move away, lose interest, play against different kids and things like that. Plus, in jh and hs all kids must be given an opportunity, even those that havent played a down in their lives. Schools can't just use "select" kids. That's unethical and unprofessional.
