"everybody" knows that the Boy Scouts is a private organization that is not required by law to allow homosexuals to join. But, that does not mean that they are not subject to public opinion. If people stopped giving donations and buying the products Scouts sell. And, if kids are not allowed to join the Scouts, they would dry up and blow away. That's what the Boy Scouts organization might need to worry about.
