I feel very sad that your dad apparently had some severe mental problems in expressing his emotions toward you. But, the fact remains, he was still your dad. You have apparently also developed some mental problems of your own by carrying around all this hatred over all these years.

You should still honor his memory as your dad. No one ever said that dads would be perfect. To prove my point of why you at least should show him some recognition, you asked the question ... "How would my life have been different if I had a father who made sure that I knew he cared?" Answer ... you wouldn't have had your life. You would not have been born! At least he gave you breath to pursue whatever you have done over all these years. Be thankful!
