Alex,

I don't think anyone is opposing the Certificate of Obligations because a building might be named after them (Changing the topic is a typical Democrat Strategy) . It is like Obama saying if you like your policy you can keep it. It is just another lie. Besides I will bet dollars to donuts that the justice center will be named after him by the successor County Commissioners. Can anyone say Lila Cockrell theatre, Wolfe Stadium, etc.

Unlike you Alex that supports ever increase in taxes and build it no matter if doesn't make sense, there are those who think fiscal responsibility and wise spending of other people's money would not spend $4.6M on a Justice Center. Just for the numbers:

The projected costs for all the projects is $9.2 million (8% increase in less than 6 months) and the bond is for only $8.5M, there is no money for a shelter or roads. In fact, the county will have to come up with another $700k out of its annual budget not to mention all the money it is paying the architect Lydnsay Thorn (I have heard anywhere from $700k to $1M so far). It appears the architect fees are well above the 6% cap for costs that are regulated by law for Federal projects. This is a county project so the Judge and Commissioner have a big checkbook (our taxes) to keep funding what appear to be excessive fees. Thorn spoke at the meeting and he said that Hays County spent more money on their new facilities but did not comment that Hays County is 4 times as large as Wilson County. Also, Mr Thorn was so proud that he did the costing which he said was rare for architects. So, I wonder how far off his costs are. Either way, there will be less money for roads if this approved.

The costs for the Courthouse exterior repairs have been quoted as $1.774M and $1.985M which is a 12% difference.

Please remember when they closed the 8964 sq foot courthouse they moved into and eventually purchased a 22,333 sq foot building (old elementary). So, they doubled there space. If they opened the court house back up they would have three times as much as when they closed the court house down. So, for me this is a typical government officials grab.

Mr Abbott has commented on how much the County can get from other sources. I still do not believe they have justified the need. If they had, they would have went to the voters in a bond election first instead of being forced on a Certificate Of Obligation voter end around which is a questionable tactic by politicians.

So, I say vote "No." and let them really justify the renovations and all the extra space.
