Grouch,

I can't help it that you are dependent on social security and medicare. Maybe you shouldn't have spent your "life time preparing to take the next step". Perhaps if you had been more positive, you could have spent your life as an optimist, living with gusto, and not planning for your existence on earth to end. Then, maybe you would have invested in yourself to never rely on anyone else to take care of you until your final day. I don't need SS or Medicare but I'm stuck with it. The government won't let you refuse it or give it back.

BTW, an example. When I was 23 years old, a neighbor tried to sell me a life insurance policy. I politely turned him down. My reasoning was I would be paying an insurance company every month, year after year, just to hedge a bet. They were betting I was going to live and I would have been betting I was going to die before my children were raised, and I was betting they were right. The premiums I never paid them, kept in my own hands, has tripled over my lifetime and are part of my retirement. Who knew?
