Dorothea Anita Muñiz Tejada was born Nov. 30, 1933, to Raul and Beatriz Muñiz in Floresville, Texas. Known as Lola to her family and friends, she married Daniel “Red” Tejada on June 29, 1957.

The two of them settled in Floresville, and raised two children, Debbie and Danny. Lola worked in Floresville schools for many years, first as the elementary school secretary, then as a bilingual aide, and finally as the “detention lady” at the middle school. She retired after 28 years of service to the Floresville ISD.

The simple pleasures in life brought great joy to Lola. She loved a good hat and road trips, the color red, playing bingo and cards, the slot machines in Vegas, Coushatta, or Lake Charles, singing with her sisters and the church ladies, writing in her journals, listening to music and dancing with Red — especially to El Tejano Enamorado — crocheting doilies and afghans, reading her Bible, and going to church. One of her favorite memories was getting to meet her musical idols Kenny Rogers and Vicente Fernandez, and it’s rumored that Chente’s love songs are about her.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Reynaldo, who died at the age of seven; parents Raul and Beatriz Muñiz; in-laws John and Edna Tejada; and her husband of 55 years, Daniel “Red” Tejada.

Lola is survived by her daughter, Debbie and son-in-law Robert Leal; son Daniel and daughter-in-law Margaret Tejada; grandchildren Jennifer Avilés (Israel), Ismael Leal (Mirya), Amanda Herrera (Bennie), Daniel III (Janie), Rebeccah Tejada, Steve De Hoyos, Eric De Hoyos, and Sofia De Hoyos; great-grandchildren Chandler Balcer (Julienne), Adrianna Balcer, Trinidad Herrera, Ismael Leal (Lily), Sage Herrera, Juliet Herrera, Logan Leal, Dylan Tejada, and Miriam Herrera; and great-great-grandchild Colton Leal. She also leaves behind her “other children” siblings, Raul “Prieto” Muñiz, Gloria Gutierrez (Raymond), Lillie Barrera (Jesse), Helen Zendejas (Raul), Elia Diaz (Herbie), Becky Gilchrist (Bobby), and Reynaldo “Pache” Muñiz; special niece Penny Cervantez; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also mourn her passing.

Visitation was held on Monday, May 15, from 9-10 a.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville.

A funeral service was held on Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
