Greetings from the Emergency Back-up Mayor!

Although we canceled our regular March meeting, it’s been a busy month, and boy, it sure has gotten warm out. We had some record highs along the border last week — big change compared to mid-February!

Everything is yellow, and springtime is in full bloom. With that comes more grass to cut, increased water usage, and annual street repairs. La Vernia City Council has approved our 2021 street-repair package, and work should begin soon. Our street maintenance is funded by a one-quarter percent sales tax, which is coming up for reauthorization in the May election. Money from this sales tax is dedicated to street maintenance and repairs within the City of La Vernia.

Citywide Spring Cleanup begins this week, and runs through April 23. La Vernia city residents who pay for monthly garbage service can bring larger items, such as brush, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters, and small furniture items to our facility at 215 Forrest Drive. Gates will be open 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Please remember that we are not equipped to accept hazardous materials, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, tires, batteries, pesticides, herbicides, paints, oils, or other liquids. Also, please note: If the gates are closed, please come back another time; no dumping allowed. If you have any questions regarding our Spring Cleanup, feel free to contact City Hall.

Work has begun to refresh the signage and markings for all City of La Vernia disabled parking spaces. Please be mindful of these parking spaces around town — especially in the park. With increased activity in the park, these spaces are in great demand.

In addition to voting on reauthorization of our street maintenance sales tax, the city will host the La Vernia ISD school board election. Early voting is April 19-27, at City Hall. Extended hours will be April 21 and 22, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election Day is May 1.

Last week, we had our first in-person council meeting in quite some time. We’re still limited to 13 people in chambers to maintain social distancing standards, but it was nice to see folks in person, and we had excellent online attendance over the Internet and phone.

Vaccinations are up, and COVID-19 is steadily declining in our area. That is a beautiful and wonderful thing.

Council approved a new commercial-grade tractor for park maintenance. We are entering into an agreement with La Vernia Market Days to provide mule rides on city property adjacent to their current facility, and we are working on a grant with the Texas Department of Transportation to provide more sidewalks in town. As part of the FELPS summer program, council approved matching funds for our library here in La Vernia. Work continues on the dog park, as council has been busy working with the coalition through some issues.

Summer will be here before you know it.

Looking forward to a spectacular fireworks display in the city park on the Fourth of July!

Respectfully serving our community,

MARTIN POORE
