Lady Hornets fall to Canyon

The recent tough fortune that has hung over the East Central Lady Hornets like a dark cloud continued April 9 at home against the Canyon Cougars. The prolific East Central offense went cold and was stifled, while the visitors from New Braunfels steadily piled up the runs and ultimately came out on top by a final score of 7-2. The loss marked the third in a row for East Central.

Freshman starting pitcher Holly Ayala went the distance for the Lady Hornets, going seven innings. While she pitched valiantly all evening, she was unable to hold down the Cougars. Canyon, currently in first place and undefeated in the district, scored first in the top of the first inning, before East Central tied the game in their half of the frame. Unfortunately for the Lady Hornets, that would be the last time they would score until the fifth inning.

On offense, junior first baseman Jazmine Torres continued her strong play at the plate this year and paced the way for the team with two hits. Joining her was sophomore outfielder Jordyn Lopez, who drove in the only RBI for the Lady Hornets.

The Cougars went up for good in the top of the third inning, when they scored twice. They scored 2 more in the top of the fifth and 1 run in each of the next two innings. The scoring drought has been the main cause of East Central’s recent slide. After scoring

31 runs in their previous three games (during which the Lady Hornets went 2-1), the offense has mustered only a total of 6 in their three losses.

As East Central heads down the stretch of the season with just three more games to go, they will have to solve their offensive woes in order to finish strong in District 26-6A play. The Lady Hornets currently sit in third place in the district, one game behind the Judson Rockets.

The Lady Hornets (18-5, 7-5) were back in action April 12 on the road against Clemens High School and won, 8-4. They were set to face Judson on the road in Converse April 16, before wrapping up at home against Steele this Thursday, April 18.
