The Nixon-Smiley Mustang powerlifting teams competed at the Region IV Division III Regional Championship Meet March 10. Nixon-Smiley walked away as the third-place team out of twenty-four schools, tying with Palacios High School for second but lost the tiebreaker, with a total of 23 points.

Nixon-Smiley missed a Regional championship by three points — a goal the team has set to win next year.

Three boys qualified to lift at the THSPA State Championship Meet in Abilene on March 24-25.

“As the head coach for the second year in a row, I cannot commend our lifters enough on the amount of personal and athletic growth they have had. We grew in the number of lifters at Regionals, the number of medals we brought home, and how many boys are going to the State meet. It is a privilege to coach such hard-working students. I am looking forward to the State meet and I hope we are able to set personal records and bring more hardware back to Nixon,” said Head Coach Paul Kirby.
