Members of the public gather in the Stockdale Independent School District board room for a special called school board meeting Sept. 15. The meeting was canceled, due to an error on the published agenda.

A special called meeting of the Stockdale Independent School District board of trustees set for 8:15 a.m. today was canceled, and is set to be rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m.

As members of the public and school board members gathered in the district administration building in Stockdale, Superintendent Todd Deaver was asked by a community member where they could sign in to speak.

Community members were taken aback when he advised there would be no public comments, and that this was not on the agenda.

At 8:13 a.m., he returned to the board room an advised that, as public comments were not included on the agenda, “… we cannot have the meeting.”

Trustees were set to discuss and consider approval of a “budget amendment to increase safety funding for Stockdale ISD Police Department.”

The district has been discussing with Chief of Security Larry Haecker — formerly with the Stockdale City Marshal’s Office — establishment of a district police department, to meet requirements by the State Legislature for each campus to have its own school resource officer.

At the regular school board meeting Sept. 11, a number of community members addressed an ongoing concern related to the elementary school campus. Several community members were present Friday morning to address these concerns, and the proposed police department.

The meeting could not be rescheduled for any earlier than Monday, due to the requirement under the Texas Open Meetings Act for agendas to be published at least 72 hours in advance of a meeting.
