The prime suspect in an Oct. 10 shooting — Johnny Vela III — turned himself in Oct. 20, after his photo and description went public earlier in the week.

Vela was arrested on warrants charging him with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, after allegedly shooting and wounding two individuals outside Roper’s Dancehall in Floresville. (See “Floresville police seek help from public to locate shooting suspect” in the Oct. 13 Wilson County News.)

According to Floresville police detective, Sgt. Gilbert Rodriguez, Vela turned himself in to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, but was transported to the Floresville Police Station for questioning.

However, after Rodriguez — the lead investigator of the case — began interviewing Vela, the suspect asked for an attorney, thereby terminating the interview. Vela was returned to the Wilson County Jail.

A young woman, who had been suspected of helping Vela leave the crime scene, also came forward Oct. 20, Rodriguez told the newspaper.

Vela reportedly fled the scene Oct. 10 in a gray two-door Honda, in which the woman was a passenger. After her police interview, she was released and has not been charged with a crime, Rodriguez said.
