Drivers may encounter slow or even stopped traffic on U.S. 181 north of Floresville this evening.

The highway has just reopened to traffic, after a truck ran into a large steel utility pole on U.S. 181 near C.R. 120, which required the closing of the southbound lanes of U.S. 181. The truck driver was evaluated by EMS at the scene and released.

According to Floresville Electric Light & Power System CEO Mark Crowson, the damaged pole supports power lines crossing the highway, causing an extensive power outage for about 1,400 customers in the Abrego Lake and Eagle Creek areas.

The highway was closed completely for a time at U.S. 181 and F.M. 775. The closures were affecting the ability of families and seniors to get to Eschenburg Field for the Floresville High School graduation. The school was prepared to delay graduation as a result, said Communications Specialist Blanca Martinez.

“We have all available people there working,” Crowson said.

As of 5:31 p.m., FELPS crews had figured a way to make temporary repairs and allow the highway to reopen, Crowson told the Wilson County News.

“It’s a big mess,” Crowson said. “We have an army of people out there, and we’re working as fast as we can.”
