Sara and Dennis Johnson Sr.

On Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, Sara and Dennis Johnson Sr. went to be with the Lord.

They celebrated 44 years of marriage on July 27, 2017. Their membership in the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs spanned 11 years. Prior to this, they were members of First Baptist Church of Floresville for more than 25 years.

Dennis Neil Johnson Sr., born Oct. 6, 1940, in Rockford, Ill., was an appointed church elder and a veteran of both the U.S. Navy Reserve and the Army National Guard. During his time in the Navy (1984-95), Dennis served as a seabee in Operation Desert Shield and later joined the American Legion, a patriotic veterans association devoted to serving the community and fellow service members.

Sara Louise Johns Johnson, born Feb. 25, 1949, in Jasper, Fla., devoted her life to caring for children, both as a loving grandmother and a volunteer in a church nursery for more than 30 years. She also held a position with the Wilson County Tax Office for more than 10 years; however, she was more recently employed with the locally owned Floresville business, Pfeil’s Home and Garden.

Sara and Dennis spent their lives working hard to support their family, and were the heart and soul of everything their family did. They were devoted in their faith, and touched many lives through ministry. They never failed to do everything they could to help anyone who needed it, especially their children. Sara and Dennis adopted two of their grandchildren (Kati and Ryan) and helped raise two more of their grandchildren. They were known as Nanny and Pa to their grandchildren and many friends. They raised, or helped raise, eight children in total. Their lives were spent caring for others, teaching the value of hard work, and living as a shining example of faith in Christ.

While Sara and Dennis had their own beautiful love story, their love story with the Lord is the one that meant the most to them. In 1978 Sara and Dennis were visited by a member of the First Baptist Church of Pierson, Fla., and asked to visit the church. After many attempts, Dennis finally decided to attend. Sara and Dennis accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior in that church. They walked down the aisle to accept Jesus together and went on to live an abundant Christ-centered life. If they had to go, there is no more meaningful place they could have gone than in the church they loved, worshipping the God they loved, and loving one another, together.

Dennis and Sara are survived by their children, James Graham (51), Neil Johnson Jr. (50), Deanna Staton (46) and husband Aaron (46), Michael Johnson (43), Kati Wall and husband Jason (37, 29), and Christopher Ryan Johnson (28) and wife Kassandra; several beloved grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many friends and family that span from coast to coast.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Floresville, Texas.

A funeral service was held on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the church.
