Double homicide in Poth shocks community

By WCN Staff

June 10, 2018:  Citizens of Poth are in shock today, as the community reels in the wake of the overnight shooting deaths of two people.

Chief Gerald Sanchez of the Poth Police Department confirmed his department received a call about a disturbance at an address on Carrol Street, just a few blocks from Poth City Hall about 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The responding officer was met by a man at the door, and noticed two people lying on the floor of the house. The individual who answered the officer’s knock has been detained by police and a weapon was recovered, Sanchez said.

The woman, in her early 20s, was dead at the scene, according to the police chief. A male, also in his 20s, was transported to Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, where he was pronounced dead. Next of kin of the deceased have been notified; however, names of all involved have not been released at this time.

The Poth Police Department is being assisted at the scene by the personnel with the Texas Rangers, Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab, and Wilson County Sherriff’s Office. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives also attended the scene.

Sanchez advises the community is not in further danger; this was an isolated incident.

The city of a little more than 2,000 is hurting, he said.

“This is a tight-knit community,” the chief said at the scene. “Everybody knows everybody. It’s tragic.”

The residence on Carrol Street — just blocks from the city’s high school and elementary school — remains an active crime scene and the investigation is ongoing.
