Gary Michael Burns

1949-2018

Gary Michael Burns, born Feb. 10, 1949, in Rice, Texas, was called home Sunday, July 1, 2018, in Sutherland Springs at the age of 69.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Suedell (Hatley) Burns; beloved friend Clay Zoeller; special aunt, Goldie Burns; aunt Harmolena Penny; and uncle Curtis Penny.

Gary is survived by his bride, Judy (Jupe) Burns, whom he eloped with 49 years ago in Columbus, Mexico. They were blessed with three boys, Travis (Shannon), Brady, and Dustin (Heather). As much as he loved his sons, he had pure, abiding, and immense love being “Pappaw” to his grandchildren, Jordan, Jarred, Jessica, and Taylor. There was never a time he wasn’t there for any events they participated in. Gary is also survived by his brother, Keith (Doran); special cousin Derwood Penny (Wanda), who was like a brother; and numerous brothers- and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Gary always lived by the Cowboy Code: If it’s not yours, don’t take it. If it’s not true, don’t say it. If it’s not right, don’t do it.

The family would like to express tremendous appreciation to Dr. William Atlas — the most caring, compassionate, and kind-hearted physician who took exceptional care of their beloved Gary.

Visitation was held on Thursday, July 5, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Home in La Vernia.

A funeral service was held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.

Interment followed in the Cover Cemetery in San Antonio.

Memorial donations may be made to the East Central School Foundation, 6634 New Sulphur Springs Road, San Antonio, TX 78263.
