Poth alumnus dies in rollover

Poth High School alumnus Luis Gonzales died in a July 12 car crash, after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel. Luis helped lead his basketball team all the way to the Regional Semifinals during his senior year.

KEN SEMLINGER/Contributor An accident near Poth July 12 resulted in the death of a former Poth High School star athlete.

Luis Gonzales, 19, of Floresville was traveling northwest on C.R. 224, approximately 3 miles north of Poth, when his Toyota sedan veered off the road, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Sgt. Deon Cockrell.

The vehicle struck a large steel gate, before overturning multiple times and coming to rest upside down. Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was reportedly returning home from dropping off a friend, according to a family friend, when he fell asleep at the wheel.

The 2017 Poth graduate was a member of the basketball, football, and track and field teams.

He earned First Team Wide Receiver his senior year on the football team.

In basketball, the post superstar was newcomer of the year as a sophomore and defensive MVP as a junior. He helped the Pirates make it all the way to the Regional Semifinals during his senior year, averaging 22 points per game and 13 rebounds.

He is survived by his parents, Ruthie Gonzales and John Guerrero, and siblings Michael, Grace, and JonMikal.

Funeral services were held July 17 at the VFW Hall in Poth. Read the obituary on page 10A.
