Floresville native Kyle Mutz, who works at Lamar University in Beaumont, is recognized in early November as a “40 Under 40” professional of Southeast Texas. Floresville High School alumnus — class of 1999 — Kyle J. Mutz has been honored as a “40 Under 40” professional in Southeast Texas by the Southeast Texas Young Professionals Organization, Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, and SoutheastTexas.com.

The Wilson County native currently serves as the director of the Disability Resource Center at Lamar University in Beaumont, where he works with students with disabilities. In his role, he also helps create equal opportunities by providing specialized accommodations and academic services to help students succeed.

The son of Butch and Judy Mutz met his wife, Jenny, while attending the University of Arizona, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Stricken with bone and muscle diseases as an infant, Mutz didn’t allow his handicaps to diminish his competitive spirit. He became known as a wheelchair-racing competitor while growing up in Floresville and earned a partial college scholarship in wheelchair track and basketball.

In college, he competed on the U.S. Paralympic National Team. This took him to the:

•1999 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia

•2005 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland

•2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mutz earned the national championship in 2007 in the 100 meters. He also has placed in two marathons.

The 40 Under 40 honors professionals who excel in giving back and making a difference in their community. The awards reception was held Nov. 8.
