FLORESVILLE — With temperatures climbing and the frequent rains abating, it’s about time for a dip in the pool.

Fortunately, the Floresville City Pool is getting ready to open to the public for the three-day Memorial Day weekend, May 27-29.

The pool will be open Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., Sunday from 1-8 p.m., and Monday from noon to 8 p.m.

However, the pool will be closed Tuesday, May 30, through Friday, June 2, before reopening Saturday, June 3, to begin its regular summer schedule. The pool will be open every day except Monday through Aug. 15. After that, the pool will be open only on weekends through Labor Day.

Next week’s closure will allow some new lifeguards to utilize the pool to complete their certified training.

“This year we’ll have an in-house instructor,” city Pool Manager Lisa Southern told the Wilson County News. “This means they can train at our own pool.”

Floresville resident Gabi Rodriguez — a lifeguard instructor at Texas State University in San Marcos — has already trained three new lifeguards, re-certified three others, and should have seven more trained for the Floresville pool after Memorial Day, according to Southern.

“All 15 lifeguard positions are filled,” she said. “But we will still accept applications, in case there is a vacancy during the summer.”

Southern, who has managed the pool since 2007, notes an addition to the swimming schedule from 8-10 p.m. Tuesdays.

“This will be for adults 18 and older,” Southern said, emphasizing that the adults should not take their children with them to the pool to wait outside.

However, there will be other opportunities for young people. The All City Youth Program will have a swim team this year. (For more information about this, contact program Director Debbie Bolf at 830-581- 9797 or allcityyouthprograms@gmail.com.)

Pool patrons will notice that there is a new diving board at the pool, as well as some new umbrellas and chairs.

“There are 15 shaded picnic tables,” Southern said, adding that patrons are welcome to bring their own folding chairs.

For the more vigorous patrons, the pool will be available each week for water aerobics Tuesday through Friday from 8-8:45 a.m., and adults-only lap swimming Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until noon.

Some patrons will be disappointed that swimming classes are already filled up, and that there will be no “Aqua Zoomba” this year. However, Southern said she is looking for some options.
